This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Amfleet,' one of many local names found on the east coast of England, from Durham to Suffolk, which have -fleet for their suffix, a shallow creek. I have not yet identified the place. [Since writing the above I find my statement as to suffix confirmed, but not that relating to the locality. Mr. Lower quotes Lambarde's Dictionary: 'Amfiete, Amfleot, et aliis Ampleot, a haven in France, as I gesse, near Boloigne'; v. Patronymica Britannica.
