From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Andrew"; v. Anderson. This name was very popular in the 13th century. As the name of the patron saint and knightly champion of Scotland, as title of the primatial see, no wonder that the Scotch have tried to monopolize Andrew, and no wonder that Anderson has followed Scotch emigration till Canada and the United States are flooded with it. But Andrew was very popular in its day in England, as our Andrews can testify. In any case, as an apostolic name it was bound to be popular all over Europe.

A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

This surname, from the baptismal name Andrew (in Greek Aindreas, 'manly') is common in Scotland both as forename and as a surname. Its popularity, no doubt, is due to its being the name of Scotland's patron saint. In the Highlands the name was early adopted appearing in Gaelic as Aindrea, with a dialectic form Anndra (due probably to Lowland pronunciation of Andrew). Andreas, clericus Moraviensis, in record, a. 1242 (RAA., I, p. 144), Andrew, a monk of Dunfermline, became bishop of Caithness in the reign of David I. fiz Andrew of the county of Dumfries rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, 810), and John, son of Andree de Huchtirardor (Auchterarder) had a charter of a tenement in Hachtirardor in 1330 (RAA., II, p. 6). John Andree and Adam Andree were present at the perambulation of the boundaries of Kyrknes and Louchor in 1395 (RPSA., p. 3), Wielelmus Andro and Johannes Andro were common councillors of Aberdeen 1399 (Guildry, p. 184), and Malcolm Andree was a tenant of the bishop of Aberdeen in 1511 (REA., I, p. 375). James Andro and Kethrin Andro were 'fylit of picry' (pilfering) in 1488 (Lanark, p. 1), Alexander Andree was sergeand in Aberdeen in 1463, Alene Andro had a tack of two oxgangs in Bellady in 1514 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 294), and Magister Alexander Andro was retoured heir in lands in Glasgow in 1605 (Retours, Lanark, 53). Andioe 1661, Androw 1546.

Cheyne and Black, Encyc. Biblica, i. 164, The name Andreas is usually believed to occur first in Herodotus (vi. 126), where it is the name of the great-grandfather of Cleisthenes of Sicyon. It occurs also in Dio Cassius (lxviii. 32) in the form ’Aνδρείας (Andreas) as the name of a rebel Jew in Crete in Trajan’s reign.

The Norman People (1874)

Andrew,Andrews. —In England these two names have their principal homes in the south - western counties, namely, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Hants, and Wilts. They are rare in the northern counties beyond the Dee and the Humber, where their place is taken by Anderson, at present best represented in Northumberland. Anderson, however, is a common name across the border, and, in fact, is frequent over the greater part of Scotland, northward to Aberdeenshire Andrew is the rarest form of the simple name, being most numerous in Cornwall, where it usurps the place of Andrews.

We have here a good example of those erroneous beliefs concerning the distribution of names which have been founded on general impressions rather than on exact evidence. Mr. Bardsley, in his "English Surnames" (second edit., p. 94), observes that Andrew, Andrews, and Anderson nearly all belong north of the Tweed; and it would seem that the Patron Saint of Scotland is held mainly responsible for this result. I have shown, however, that, though Anderson is a common Scotch name, it has made a very successful invasion southwards across the English border. Andrew and Andrews, however, can scarcely be termed Scotch in any sense of the word. In the directories for Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as in the county directories for Scotland, we find that whilst Anderson has a relative frequency of about 100 per 10,000, Andrew is represented only by about 8, and Andrews by 2. In truth, if I had treated Scotch names in the manner I have done in the case of English names, Andrew and Andrews would have been probably excluded from my list; and, in fact, they are absent from the list of characteristic Scottish names given in this work.
