This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Andrew"; v. Anderson. This name was very popular in the 13th century. As the name of the patron saint and knightly champion of Scotland, as title of the primatial see, no wonder that the Scotch have tried to monopolize Andrew, and no wonder that Anderson has followed Scotch emigration till Canada and the United States are flooded with it. But Andrew was very popular in its day in England, as our Andrews can testify. In any case, as an apostolic name it was bound to be popular all over Europe.
