Andrulewich Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

This is either a Sephardic Jewish surname that was Lithuanianized or taken later by a Sephardic family (with two members changing the Kohanic "Kasis" to "Kazys" for their given names, leaving the only clue as to their heritage). Only one family member is known to have used "Andrulis", and the rest took "Andrews" either to conceal their Jewish heritage or assimilate. The rest took "Andruskiewicz", among other names and variants of other names, as a way to conceal their Jewish heritage.

"Andrulewicz" is among the Polonized variants, "Andrulevich" among the other Eastern European-linguistic variants (e.g., "Андрулевіч" in Ukrainian), and "Andrelewitz" among the ones not listed here (e.g., of Rochla Andrelewitz, Rochla bas Gilya or Rachel bat Hillel).
