Andrássy (or Andrásy) is an old Hungarian noble family name of Székely (Transylvanian) descent, derived from the first name András with the suffix -i. The given name András is of Greek origin (Andreios), meaning manly, masculine and brave. The Andrássy surname became known in the Principality of Transylvania in the 16th century, and the family rose to the ranks of high nobility in the 17th century. The most famous bearer of the name was Count Gyula Andrássy, the first Hungarian Prime Minister after the Compromise of 1867 with the Habsburgs, and subsequently Foreign Minister of Austria-Hungary in 1871–1879.
