(French-Teut. and Teutonic) Prob. from the Germanic tribal name Latinized as Angri- varii, i.e. ‘the People of the Pastures.’ [O.H.Ger. angar (Mod. anger), a pasture, meadow] Hardly Old Norse angr, ‘grief,’ ‘sorrow’ (whence English anger), cognate with Latin angor, grief.
Anger is a fairly common French surname; and Angerville is a common Northern-French place-name.
Perhaps from one who personated this vice in some miracle play; more probably, however, from hanger, a word descriptive of locality. A hanger is a wooded declivity.
Some derive this name from hanger, a wooded declivity; but Ainge, Ainger, Anger, Angier, Augier, Aunger (sometimes pronounced Ainger), and Aungier are rather from Anjou, an old prov. of France (now forming dep. Maine-et-Loire, and parts of Sarthe, Mayenne, and Indre-et-Loire), whose cap. was Angers. Aunger and Aungier are in charters found Latinised to Angevinus; and Angevine is found in Q. R. with the prefix Le.
From Angers, Anjou. Osmond Angevinus 1086, possessed estates in Essex (Domesd.). He and Wido A. were ancestors of a family which continued in 1202 (Rotulus Cancellarii). In 1165 many members are mentioned in Oxford, Surrey, York, Essex, and Norfolk (Liber Niger). Joscelin D’Aunger 1169 witnessed the charter of Lanercost (Mon. ii. 131). Ralph de Angers (13th cent.) held lands in Wilts (Testa de Neville). The Aungiers Earls of Longford, and the Hangers Lords Coleraine, descended from this family.
