This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Ann,' from the diminutive Annie. 'Pay me, quod he, or by the swete Seinte Anne.' Chaucer, The Canterbury Tales.
(a) Bapt 'the son of Agnes,' popularly Annis, Annes, or Annas. The variant Anningson is curious, and seems founded upon some early diminutive Annin, with an excrescent 'g', as in Jennings; compare Pattison and Pattinson. In general (a) must be looked upon as the parent of all these names. Annis was the popular form of Agnes from the 14th century downwards.
