'Annet, the common gull, so called in Northumberland': Halliwell. No doubt taken from the once popular diminutive of Anne, especially popular on the north-east coast of England. Annot Alyface is a character in Ralph Roister Doister, by Nicholas Udall, written about 1550. She sings: 'Work, Tibet: work, Annot: work, Margery: Sew, Tibet: knit Annot: spin, Margery: Let us see who will win the victory.': Old English Plays.
