Helen Ape in the Regality of Spynie was accused of theft in 1596 (SCM., II, p. 132). Ape is the Old English feminine of Apa, an ape, and was also a personal name, though perhaps an uncomplimentary one. It was also used as a by name among the Norsemen, Apt, fool. As a personal name it is in record in England ante 1066 (Searle). Forstemann considers Aba, 'man;' the root of the name. compare Bjorkman, Zur englischen Namenkunde, p. 13—14.
John le Ape. H.R. This "Jackanapes" appears to have been an inhabitant of the parish of St. Frideswide's, Oxford. Prof. Leo. thinks that the ape (simius) gave name to some English localities, which seems incredible. It is true, however, that we have some names of places, of which this word is a component syllable, as Apethorpe, Apeton, Apewood, Apenliolt, Apedale, &c.
