Arantes Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Derived from denantes, meaning someone that comes from the city of Nantes in France. There are parochial records that contain people with this surname in northern Portugal in the valley of the river Cávado (specifically in Braga and Amares in the 17th century). Denantes progressively changed its form to Danantes then to Darantes and finally to De Arantes, afterwards with the loss of the de particle in the early 20th century the surname acquired its current form.
The reason why the founder of the family came to northern Portugal is not known but he must have been of some importance since his descendants whose baptisms were recorded by the church were mostly landowners in the late 16th and 17th centuries.
