Arconti Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Arconti is an old Italian word meaning 'warlords'. It derives from the Greek archonti, plural of archons, which is the word in the New Testament most often translated in such ways as "the rulers and princes of the world." One line of Arcontis in the United States and Italy traces the origin of the family name back to an infant boy left in a basket on a convent door in Milan, Italy, at the time of Napoleon's rule over Northern Italy (approximately 1800). Due to the baby being accompanied in the basket by a bag of gold coins, the nuns of the convent reportedly assumed the child likely to be the illegitimate son of someone like one of Napoleon's generals, and so named the child accordingly.
