Ardagh Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This is one of the small number of Irish surnames derived from a place-name. (Matheson was wrong in placing Kilkenny, Limerick, Cavan and Monaghan in this toponymic category). There are parishes called Ardagh in five different counties, and, of course, the diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnois. That in Meath is not far from Co. Louth. At present the name is rare and scattered, but formerly it was mainly associated with Co. Louth, where it occurs in legal and ecclesiastical records quite frequently from 1299, when Richard Ardagh, also called de Ardagh, was a Co. Louth juror. Several similar instances are to be found in the next century, e.g. in the Justiciary Rolls. In the fifteenth century we find John Ardagh a chaplain in the diocese of Armagh, which includes Co. Louth, and a Walter Ardagh in the muster of archers at Mellifont in 1434. In 1541again, Robert Ardagh of Disert, Co. Louth, was another priest: and so on up to the seventeenth century, after which the name is found in all the provinces, but not at all numerous in any of them. Griffith's Valuation reveals that there were eleven families of Ardagh in Co. Waterford in 1850, one of which had a very considerable property there. And there General Sir John Charles Ardagh (1840-1907), was born: he distinguished himself in the British Service in India; while another Waterford man, Rev. Samuel Ardagh (1803-1869),was prominent in Canada.
