ARDERNE: Sir Alexander de Arderne swore fealty to Edward l at St. Andrews in 1291 (Bain, 11,508), and Robert Arderne, merchant of Scotland, petitioned for aid in 1427 (Bain, IV, 1014). From Arderne in Cheshire, England, where a family of the name existed early in the thirteenth century.
ARDERNE: "The traditionary account of the origin of this family is from Turchetil, son of Alwyn, officiary earl of Warwick, in the time of Edward the Confessor; which Turchetil succeeded his father, but being afterwards deprived of his earldom by William the Conqueror, retired to the woody part of the county, and assumed the name of Arderne or Arden." Banks.
The Ardernes are a very old and distinguished Cheshire family dating back to the 13th century: there are several branches, the Ardernes of Aldford, Alvanley, and Harden, being the main stock (O.). The name of De Ardern or De Arderne was in the 13th century dispersed over many parts of England, occurring in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Essex, and Somerset (H. R.).
