Argue Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This rare name has attracted considerable attention on account of the existence of a Sligo firm of solicitors called Argue and Phibbs-a remarkable enough title for members of the legal profession to be almost a tourist attraction. The founder of the firm was not a Sligo man but came from Co. Cavan, the place of origin of all Argue families few of which today are to be found far from their original homeland.

In Co. Leitrim, close to Co. Cavan, there is a place called Killargue or Killarga, but according to O'Donovan this is named not from the family but from an obscure Saint Fearga. I have little doubt that Argue is an anglicization of some Gaelic Irish surname but cannot say for certain what is its original form, Possibly Mac Giolla Fhearga. A Fiant of 1591 mentions a Mahon O'Haraga but this man was from Co. Clare or Galway. In 1751 both Harachy and O'Harachy appear in a list relating to Stranorlar, Co.

Donegal, which again is a long way from Co. Cavan. Argue is not an English surname, though Argument is found there (a corruption of the French place-name Aigremont).

This Co. Cavan name is not of English origin but the Irish form of it (possibly Ó hEarga) has not been determined with certainty. SIF 11
