Arrarte Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The surname Arrarte is of Basque origin. Meaning: (arte=entre) (arra=piedra) 'stone path' English and or 'pedregal' Spanish. The basque surnames are toponimicos (Spanish) or toponymics (English). Berango is the village where the surname Arrarte appeared it or around 1535. They migrated around the coast line of Vizcaya: Lemoniz, Getxo, Plencia, Barrika, Bilbao, Portugalete and Santurtzi.

It was Tomas Arrarte Murrieta the forebear who brought his surname to Peru (ports of Callao and Payta); around 1830.Tomas or Thomas was born in Santurtzi a port in the province of Vizcaya or Biscay, Basque Country close to Bilbao.I found out that Tomas Arrarte associated himself with the Murrieta it or around 1800 back in Santurtzi when Tomas was the Mayordomo de la Cofradia de Mareantes del Puerto de Santurtzi (Steward of the seafarers) and Mariano Murrieta Piloto Mayor (harbor pilot)at that port.

In Peru all the Arrarte are descendants of Tomas. We all come from ladies like: Lomba, Cordova, Tizon.

In Uruguay all the Arrarte are descendants of Jose Arrarte Unibazo from Lequeitio, Bizkaia, Basque country.

It was Peruvians and Uruguayans whom took the surname to Argentina, Australia, Canada, Ecuador and USA.

The information that I am providing has been confirmed through data collected from various sources, mainly from the book "40,000 years of Berango" written by Alberto Diez Saiz and Carlos Arrarte Rubio who does search on his surname back in Barcelona and Santander where we still have Arrartes.

The history of Arrarte is closely connected with the seas and the seafarers: world wide navigators.
