Ashburner Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the ashburner'; one of the oldest and most familiar names in Furness and the English Lake district. The ash-burner was a manufacturer of charcoal, to be used for the bloomsmithies of the middle ages. It is probable that the ash-burner's craft covered the process of smelting as well. The traces of ancient bloomeries are still to be found in the coppice woods that skirt the shores of Windermere, Coniston, and the Duddon estuary. Gradually the occupative term became collier, and ousted the other. The surname, Ashburner, however, will for ever remain a memorial of the primitive period when iron ore was smelted in the woods, whose trees supplied the fuel; see Bloomer and Collier. Instances from the Furness church registers are needless; they abound on every page.

1545. Baptised — John Asburner: St. Mary's, Ulverston.

William Ashburner, of Cartmell, 1606: Lancashire Wills (Richmond).

1734. Baptised — William, s. of Joseph Ashburner: St. James, Clerkenwell.
