(English) 1 Spear-Man. [Anglo-Saxon Æscmann: v. Ash2] 2 Ash-Tree Man, i.e. Dweller at an Ash-Tree. [Old English æsc, ash-tree] Walter Ascheman.—Hundred Rolls
In Anglo-Saxon poetry aesc or ash is constantly used in the sense of spear, because the staff of a spear was usually made of that wood. So the Latin ferrum signifies both iron and sword. Ashman is therefore the equivalent of spearman. Its forms in the H.R. are Asscheman, Aschman, and Ashman; and in Domesd. Assemannus.
Lower says the forms of this name in the H.R. are Asscheman, Aschman, and Ashman; and in Domesday Assemannus; and he thinks the name equivalent to spearman, œsc or ash in Anglo-Saxon poetry being constantly used in the sense of spear, because the staff of a spear was usually made of that wood. I take it that this name is the same as Asman, Osman, Osmon, Osmund (whence doubtless Houseman, Housman), from as, os, which in German names signifies excellent (excellens, præstans, egregius). Wachter renders Osmund, vir præstans; and Oswald, tutor egregius; and he says os is the same as the Welsh od.
From the Old Norse, Asmundr; from the Danish, Asmund; from the German, Assman; from the Dutch, Asman; in the Domesday Book, Asseman, Osmund; a personal name.
Ashburner: the man employed on the production of potash. Till soap was invented, ashes were employed as a detergent.
