From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Ashworth,' a chapelry in the parish of Middleton, Lancashire, anciently Asseheworth. This small place (pop. 233 in 1861) has given birth to a surname that has become largely represented. It is familiar to every town and village in south Lancashire. Henry Ashworth (1794-1880), the friend of Cobden, was born at Birtwistle, near Bolton, a few miles from Ashworth, on Sept. 4, 1794. Caleb Ashworth, D.D. (1722-75), a celebrated dissenter, was born at Rossendale, Lancashire John Ashworth (1813-75), preacher, manufacturer, and author, was born at Cutgate, near Rochdale; v. Dictionary of National Biography ii. 187-8. The little village has kept itself well in the remembrance of Lancashire people.
