Atiko was a surname used in the 1860s during the Spanish colonial period in The Philippines. This surname belonged to a Japanese-Catholic immigrant named Akihito. His family left Japan because of their religious beliefs. He fell in love with a native farm-girl from Marinduque, an island in The Philippines, where they had a family.
Due to the pronunciation of the Filipinos, who were familiar with the Spanish accent, Hatico was used around 1911, when his two sons went to Luzon to live with the Japanese community.
Through the years it was eventually changed to Jatico as the Spanish pronounce the ja- (ha) and -tiko was changed to (tico).
