1458: Ducange, s.v. ‘albareta.’
A Norman personal name, as Aubrey or Alberious de Vere. A pedigree of this family drawn up by Vincent, Windsor Herald, temp. Elizabeth, commences with "Saint Aubrey, of the blood royal of France, came into England with William the Conqueror, anno 1066, as the Chronicles of All Souls College testify, which are there to be seen tyed to a chaine of iron." Courthope's Debrett. What the Chronicle here referred to may be, I know not, but there is no doubt of the Norman origin of the family.
A corruption of the German Alberic, a name given in hope of power or wealth, ric signifying rich or powerful; always rich.
Sir Reginald Aubrey, 1088, was granted lands in Brecknock by Bernard de Newmarché. The Norman origin of this family is admitted. It may be the same as the family of Alvery, or Alfrey. Osmond de Alebrai and Samson de A. occur in Normandy, 1198 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). Hence the Baronets Aubrey.
