(from a place name) From the village of Auerbach, in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. The name occurs as early as the fifteenth century. Moses Auerbach, the court Jew of the bishop of Regensburg, was the first to use it. It appears on monuments in the cemetery of Vienna from 1606 on. Other forms are Awerbach, Awerbuch, Orbach, Urbach.
