Augusto Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Augusto means 'sacred', 'consecrated', 'sublime', 'high'. It comes from the Latin, Augustus, meaning 'holy', 'venerable', 'high', probably derived from augere, a word meaning 'increase'.

The name Augustus was a title added to the Roman emperors with the intention of adding the idea that would be sacred beings. The title was first used by the first Roman emperor Gaius Octavian Julius Turino, which came to be called Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian Augustus, better known as Octavian Octavian Augustus, or simply Augusto. Augustus was the great-nephew of Julius Caesar, the adopted son as heir in his will. He became known as the emperor who spent more time in power (44 years), this period was marked initially by Pax Romana "Roman Peace", a season of peace where there was no barbarian invasions. The month of August was named thus in honor of Augustus, who died this month, formerly called sextilis.Noteworthy is also the French philosopher Auguste Comte (1798-1857), the founder of sociology. Some empresses also used the title "Augusta", which reached even to be adopted by three Polish kings. He arrived in England via the Hanover House in the early eighteenth century, becoming very popular among English speakers. In Portugal it appeared at Lisbon Statistical Almanac in 1838.
