Avonesyan Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

An Armenian surname and variant of the surname Ovanesyan, itself a variant of Hovhannisyan. The Armenian name Hovhanes and its feminine form Hosanna are often shortened to Ova(h)nes and Ovsanna. The former can be shortened to Ohan. Avanesyan and its variants are patronyms, meaning they were adopted from the name of a male ancestor, usually a father. In this case the name is Hovhanes, which is the Armenian rendering of John. They both derive from the Hebrew name Yochanan, meaning 'Yahweh is gracious'. The suffix,-yan,-ian, or-jan, means 'son of'. So the surname literally means 'son of Hovhanes' or 'son of gracious Yahweh'.
