From Audrieu or Aldrey, near Caen. It was held from the See of Bayeux. In 1083 William de Aldreio had lands in England (Exon. Domesd.). Roger de A., 1183, held lands in Durham (Boldon Book, 580), and William de A., 1165-1214, witnessed a charter in Scotland (Chron. Mailros). In 1194 Hugh de A., of Gloucester, occurs (Rotuli Curiae Regis). In 1318 Peter de Audrey was pardoned as an adherent of the Earl of Lancaster (Parliamentary Writs).

The old county name of Awdry is not at present represented amongst the farmers, but is to be found amongst the gentry. The Awdrys of Seend were resident landowners in that parish for more than 200 years. The earliest known ancestor was vicar of Melksbam in 1601 (A.).
