Azevedo is derived from the Latin word used to nominate a tree: Azevo.

People who write about Azevedo's family origins found that the oldest recording of the surname comes from around the XII century: Dom Pedro Mendes de Azevedo adopted the surname.

There are documents about him because he was owner of "Couto do Azevedo" and was named knight of the King of Portugal Sancho I.

One recording of the surname in Brazil of fundamental importance is Dom Inácio de Azevedo, the Jesuit missionary who take a ship to Brazil in 1570 with the intent to convert the indigenous people to the catholic religion. The group who came with him (32 Portuguese and 8 Spanish) are known as the 40 martyres. He was the leader of the expedition and died because the ship was intercepted by French Calvinists, who threw the expeditionaries to the sea. He was beatified in 1854 by the Pope Pius IX. Because of the historical fact, people believe in that the surname actually came to Brazil during the XVI century.
