Azpetia Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The surname Espitia derives from Azpeitia (Azpeitia / Aspeitia / Aspitia / Espitia):
The noble and loyal villa de Azpeitia is a town in the province of Guipuzcoa, Basque Country (Spain), belonging to the region of Urola Coast (or Urola Middle) with a population of 14.054 inhabitants (2007), has an extension of 69,39 km2 with a population density of 202,54 inhabitants per km2.
Toponymy:
This town was founded in 1310 by the Castilian king under the name of Garmendia de Iraurgui. Garmendia was the name of the place where the foundation was made and the Iraurgui attachment refers to the river and valley in which the population is located. Only a year later, in 1311, the king ordered the name Salvatierra de Iraurgui to be used to call the town. In 1397 there is evidence, by the payroll of those attending the General Meetings of Guetaria, that the name of 'Salvatierra de Iraurgui' was used but there is also evidence, from the same Meetings, of the use of the name of Azpeitia. In 1415 the name of 'Salvatierra de Iraurgui' appears again in the ordinances of the brotherhood where the name 'Azpeitia' also appears in the years 1457 and 1463.[2] Abraham Otelio says in his play El teatro universal which was published in 1588 that in Guipúzcoa there are many towns that have several names, among them he names the one of Azpeitia which also receives the denominations of Urazveitia and Salvatierra de Iraurgui.
The word Azpeitia, which appears written in ancient documents such as Ayzpeitia (this is the case of the register of the Juntas of Elgoibar of 1543), comes from the Basque words Aizt which means 'rock' or 'rock' and be e itia, which means 'from below'. The rock to which it refers is the one that forms Mount Izarraitz. This mountain is located between the towns of Azpeitia and Azcoitia (the etymology of the latter comes to assign 'above the rock' or 'above the rock'). The permutation of the letter ' b 'by the letter' p ' is very common in Basque. Already in 1759 Father Larramendi in his work Chorography said
Izoarraitz, the most high mountain, in the jurisdiction of Azpeitia and Azcoitia, from which both villages took their names, and means mount down and mount up
These same hypotheses are affirmed by Martín de Anguiozar and H. Garayalde.
Then Espitia is a derivative of Azpeitia and is not native to the Cundiboyacense plateau since the Basques arriving in America landed on the Colombian Caribbean coast, so the surname is very common in the Cordovan savannah. Many Basque surnames can be found in Antioquia and Córdoba.
