Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Bacon, from the Anglo—Saxon bacan, to bake, to dry by heat. Some derive this surname from the Saxon baccen or buccen, a beech—tree. Upon the monument of Thomas Bacon, in Brome Church in Suffolk (England), there is a beech—tree engraven in brass, with a man resting under it. It appears, also, that the first Lord—keeper, Sir Nicholas Bacon, with his two wives, are represented in a similar manner.

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

In H.R. this name is found Bachun, Bacun, and Bacon, and is said to be derived from Bacon, a seigniory in Normandy. Lower says in some instances Bacon may be a corruption of Beacon, and that, from their connection with Bayeux, the Bacons were sometimes Latinised De Bajocis. I consider the name a French diminutive of Bach, from Gaelic bach, a brook, rivulet. Hence Bacot, another diminutive. Bacon has been corrupted to Buggin.

Ludus Patronymicus (1868) by Richard Stephen Charnock

. The first member of this family settled in the Isle of Man in 1724.

Manx Names (1890) by Arthur William Moore

This Norman family, of which the famous Roger Bacon and Francis Bacon, Viscount of St. Albans, the great philosophers, were members, derived its name from that of an ancestor. We find that name Bacon or Bacco 11th cent. in Maine, but this family was Northman. Anchetil Bacon before the Conquest made grants at his lordship of Molay to St. Barbe en Auge (Des Bois); William B., Lord of Molay, 1082, founded Holy Trinity, Caen: Richard B. occurs later; and 1154 Roger Bacon (who is mentioned 1154 as of Vieux Molay) held estates in Wilts (Rot. Pip.). In 1165 Robert, William, and Alexander B. held four knights’ fees of ancient enfeoffment in Essex from the Barony of Montfichet (Liber Niger). The further descent of the English family is well known; of it are the Baronets Bacon.

The Norman People (1874)

From the Old Norse, Bekan; in the Domesday Book, Baco; a personal name.

British Family Names: Their Origin and Meaning (1903) by Henry Barber

Bacon is a very ancient surname in this county. Knightly families of Bacon or Bacune held manors in the 13th and 14th centuries in the parishes of Dengie and Mountnessing, manors which seem to have taken in each case the name of Bacon from their early lords (M.). Bacon was the name of the mayor of Colchester in 1657 and 1695 (C.). Probably the original Bacons of Essex branched off long ago from the great Suffolk family of Bachun, Bacun, or Bacon, itself descended from a Norman stock in the 11th century (L.). In the 13th century, Bacun was a common name in Suffolk and Oxfordshire, and less so in Norfolk and Gloucestershire (H. R.). Bacon is now also established in Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, and Derbyshire.
