Badger Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the badger,' a hawker, a dealer in corn and other commodities, buying in one place to sell in another.
Thomas le Baggere, Oxfordshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Robert le Bagger, Lancashire, 1333: Lay Subsidy (Rylands).
Willelmus Bagger, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Ricardus Badger, 1379: ibid.
John le Baggere, Close Rolls, 37 Edward I.
1573. Roland Badger, Worcestershire: Register of the University of Oxford.
1605. Baptised — William, s. John Bagger: St Thomas the Apostle (London).
From the occupation, 'a dealer in corn,' ME. badger, bager. Thomas Badger, servant in Inwerweek (Innerwick), 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 77).
Pedlar; Corn-Dealer. [From the animal: Middle English bageardta badger; bage, a badge or stripe + the (French-Teut.) intens. suff. -ard]
(English) One who buys grain and other commodities and carries them elsewhere in a bag to sell; one who came from Badger (Bacga’s shore), in Shropshire.
1. A huxter or hawker. "If any person shall act as a badger without license, he is to forfeit five pounds." Jacob's Law Dict. The etymon seems to be the French bagagier, or baggage-carrier. "Badger is as much to say as Bagger, of the French word baggage, i. e., sarcina; and it is used with us for one that is licensed to buy corn or other victuals in one place, and carry them to another." Termes dela Ley. 2. A parish in Shropshire.
A licensed dealer in grain; a hawker, a peddler; also, the name of a small animal.
Ferguson considers this name the same as the Old German Patager, from beado war, ger spear. It is rather from badger, an old word for a hawker; or from Badger, a parish co. Salop.
(English), Pedlar, Corn-factor; also the animal called likewise a “baud,” a “brock,” and a “gray.”
A location name in Salop.
Badger: properly a Bagger. “Up to the seventeenth century an ordinary term for one who had a special licence to purchase corn from farmers at the provincial markets and fairs, and then dispose of it again elsewhere, without the penalties of engrossing” (Bardsley).
Badger: The Old English name is Brock, and both occur as surnames. The brock was a cognizance of the De Brooke family, and so may have been a tavern sign.
Badger was a Warwickshire name in the reign of Henry VIII. (D.). There was a Thomas le Baggere in the adjoining county of Oxford in the 13th century (H. R.).
