This is a story from Satya Yuga, passed down through generations. In the mountains of Uttarakhand, there lived a brave Garhwali woman named Asi, around 22 years old. She was a simple village woman, strong and devoted. She carried her newborn baby on her back, wrapped securely in the traditional Garhwali cloth used by women to carry infants. At the same time, she was eight months pregnant and also carrying a bundle of grass she had collected for her household.
One evening, Asi was in the forest where village women usually went to cut wood and grass for cooking. As dusk approached, a sudden cry echoed through the forest—'Wolf! Wolf!'Fear spread instantly, and all the women ran away to save their lives.
But Asi could not run. She had a newborn on her back, an unborn child in her womb, and grass in her hands. She stood her ground. The wolf came toward her. The only weapon she had was a sickle, locally known as khurali.
With unmatched courage, Asi fought the wolf alone, through the night, not for herself, but to protect the lives of her children. Her body was covered in blood, yet she did not give up. In the end, the wolf was cut into two pieces.
After the battle, Asi gave birth to her child. Sadly, due to her severe injuries and blood loss, she passed away.
To honor her sacrifice and bravery, the villagers named her children 'Bagasi.'Here, 'Bag' refers to the wolf, and 'Asi' refers to the brave woman. Thus, the name Bagasi was born—a symbol of courage, motherhood, and sacrifice.
This legacy continues even today, carried forward by her descendants.
