My great-grandfather, John Behan, was born in 1825 in Kilkenny, Ireland. He was a convict exile transported to Australia in 1849 aboard the Havering. Upon arrival on the 8/11/1849 in Sydney he received his TOL (prisoners No.49/8950 & was sent to the Camden area of NSW.

My great-grandfather, John Behan, was born in 1825 in Kilkenny, Ireland. He was a convict exile transported to Australia in 1849 aboard the Havering. Upon arrival on the 8/11/1849 in Sydney he received his TOL (prisoners No.49/8950 & was sent to the Camden area of NSW. He married my great grandmother, Bridget Cody also from Kilkenny, at St Marys Cathedral in 1855. They had 8 children, Mary, Ellen, Cornelius, Thomas, Catherine, Bridget (my grandmother), Daniel & Martin.
Sometime over the years John & Bridget adopted the surname Bowen & also Bohen which is on Johns death certificates. Of the sons, Cornelius used Bowen, Thomas used Bowen & Baihn, (Bowen is on his death cert.) & he is buried at Rookwood. Baihn is on the headstone. Daniel & Martin used Baihn when they married & for their children. Martin also witnessed my grandmothers marriage cert. as Martin Baihn in 1893. Having contacted many of the Baihns during my family research I think most Baihns in Australia are descended from Daniel & Martin. Thomas never married & had no descendants. I suspect that being an ex convict or the children of one was not very fashionable in late 1800s or the first half of the 1900s hence the name changing. I might add that Martin was the only one who could read or write.
