The surname Bakhati is comprised of bakhat, meaning 'time interval' in the Persian language. It developed into Bakhati when they were the noble courtiers to the House of Shah in Gorkha advising the King so they were know as the principal adviser so used to be called at times so became known as Bakhati. As the Bakhati belonged to the ancient aristocracy, beginning with the ancient and noble House of Bakhati. Bakhati were the noble courtiers to the House of Shah in Gorkha (King of Nepal) from the late 15th century until the late 18th century. All modern Bakhati trace their ancestry to the MulKaji Shree Shiva Raj Bakheti and his son Kaji Biraj Bakhati of Gorkha. Bakhati migrated to the new parts of the Kingdom upon the request of then King Prithvi Narayan Shah the Great. Bakhati were the noble courtiers and army leaders to the King Prithivi's Court. They helped the King to win many battles during the Unification Wars and after it they protected by guarding the forts of Nuwakot, Dahachok and Gorkha. After the Unification wars the House of Bakhati were divided into three Houses which are now in Gorkha (original), Dahachok (late 17th century) and Nuwakot. But all the Bakhati trace their ancestry to the noble and ancient House of Bakhati from Gorkha.
