BOLEBEC: From Bolbec in the department of Seine Inferieure, Normandy. Only three individuals of this name appear in Scottish records. Walter de Bolebec witnessed Earl David's foundation charter of the Abbey of Selkirk c, 1120 (Kelso), and the confirmation by Earl Henry of the grant of Ederham and Nesbit by Gospatrick to the monks of St. Cuthbert at Colaingham, c. 1141 (Ratne, App., 103). He also witnessed King David's gift of a toft in Berewic to the Priory of May c. 1147—53 (May, 2), and c. 1153—65 he witnessed a charter by Malcolm IV of "terra Jocelini" to Neubotle (Neubotle, p. 9). As de Bolebech he witnessed, c. 1150, the charter by Robert, bishop of St. Andrews granting the church of Lohworuora (now Borthwick) to Herbert, bishop of Glasgow (REG., p. 13). William de Bolbethi witnessed a charter by Waltheus, earl of Dunbar in 1166 (Ratne, App. 26). Dominus Ricardus de Bolbek witnessed a resignation of the lands of Edeluestun to the Church of Glasgow in 1233 (REG., p. 141). A genealogy of the English family of the name is given in J. C. Hodgson's History of Northumberland V, p. 224, Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1902.
