Ballagh Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This name is one of the epithet type like Bane or Reagh: it is derived from the Irish ballach (speckled, marked). As might be expected, therefore, it has not been confined to a particular area. Thus we find ~Robert Ballagh a miller at Carlingford, Co. Down, in 1439, Patrick Ballagh a butcher at Kilkenny in I509, Edmund Ballaghe arraigned with two Butlers and others of equal standing as “common robbers”
in Co. Tipperary in 1514, and Farrole Ballough one of the kern mustered by O'Byrne for service in England in 1544. Later in the sixteenth century people called Ballagh as a surname were to be found 111Counties Clare, Galway, Kerry, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Meath and Dublin. In the past Ballagh was also common as a distinguishing agnomen added to christian name and surname. In quite modern times Ballagh is a rare surname associated chiefly with Ulster, especially Co. Monahgan. In the Hearth Money Rolls of Co. Monaghan (1663-65) it does not occur as a surname, but as an agnomen with MacKenna it does, e.g. Patrick Ballagh MacKennah: MacKennas were very numerous in parts of that county so that it is not unlikely that the agnomen Ballagh did become standardized as a surname there at the end of the seventeenth century. Similarly in the list of 1641 outlaws we find one of the Byrnes of Co. Wicklow described as alias Ballagh.
An epithetic surname formed from the Irish adjective ballach (speckled, marked). SIF 13
