Of territorial origin from the old lands of the name in the parish of Maryldrk, Kincardineshire. Huwe de Balmenaghe of the county of Perth rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a fox erect, with mitre and pastoral staff, addressing a bird in a tree, S' Hvgon de Balmenaih (Bain, II, p. 200,532). The horse of Adam de Balmanaghe is mentioned in 1312 (Bain, III, p. 428), Robert Balmanauch was bailie and burgess of Karale in 1361 (ER., II, p. 61), the land of Gilbert de Balmanow in Crale is mentioned in 1421 (RAA., II, 56), and Robert de Balmannoch is mentioned in a case between the abbeys of Arnbroath and Balmerino in 1459 (ibid., 125). Robert de Balmanow or Balmanach was burgess of Dundee in 1447 and 1470 (REB., II, 68; Laing, 163), and Robin Balmanoche was auditor of complaints in 1473 (APS., II, p. 103). Jacobus Balmannoch witnessed a lease by George, Abbot of Inchaffray in 1491 (Incfiaffray, p. XCVII), sasine of the lands of Balmannoche Beth was given to Thomas Balmannoch in 1495 (Laing, 221), and in 1556 there is recorded a payment to William Bawmanno (EBR., p. 322). Alexander Balmanno of that Ilk was charged in 1582 with bearing, wearing, and shooting with pistolets (Trials, I, p. 100), Adam Balmanno was enrolled burgess of Dundee in 1589 (Weddp. 171), in 1627 Peter Balmanno of Carloungie gave a bond of caution (RPC., 2. ser.
