BALTRODYN: From Baltrodyn or Balantradoch in Midlothian, formerly one of the residences of the Templars. The place name was later changed to Arniston. Walter de Baltrodyn witnessed a composition between the bishop of Aberdeen and the abbot of Lindores in 1259 (REA., I, p. 27). As Walter de Baltrodi (Baltrodin, Baltroddi) he was appointed bishop of Caithness in 1263 (Theiner, 229), and died in 1270. The name of Walter Balrodyn, witness, 1257 (Inverurie, p. 50) is most probably an incorrect spelling of this name. In 1332 reservation was made of a benefice to Adam de Baltrodouch of the diocese of Glasgow (Pap. Lett., II. p. 390). Adam Blancrodock (or Blancrodoke) had a charter of the lands of Craigie and Westmaler in the sheriffdom of Perth from David II (RMS., I, App. II, 1123). In MS. Acta Dominorum Concilii in MS. in Register House, Edinburgh), the name is spelled Blantrodok.
