BALVAIRD: From the small place of this name in the Fifeshire portion of the parish of Abernethy. Alan Balward appears as vicar of Kalendar in 1530 (Cambus., 182), William Baward was juror on an inauest held at Cupar in 1522 (SCBF., p. 266) Walter Baward appears as burgess of Perth in 1552 (Gaw), and in 1558 Sir Alexander Balward, a Pope's knight, was vicar of Logye (Laing, 688). Caution was found for Elizabeth Balvaird in 1586 (RPC., IV, p. 99), and in 1599 the Tolbuith house wall and pertinents in Dysart were set to Peter Balvaird (Dysart, p. 25). Agnes Balvaird and her two sisters were retoured heirs portioners of Andrew Balvaird of Glentarlde their father in the vill and lands of Glentarkie in 1647 (Retours, Fife, 713,714), John Balvaird was minister of Hoy and Gramesay in 1668 (Orkney), and another John Balvaird, of Ballomiln, in the parish of St. Ninians, is in record in 1767 (Stirling). 1678 Ballvaird; Balvard.
