From Baionville, now Banneville, near Caen. In 1093 Fulco de B. witnessed a charter of Robert Fitz-Hugh to Chester Abbey (Mon. i. 101). About 1160 William and Robert de Baionville witnessed a charter of Plympton Abbey, Devon (Mon. ii. 9). In 1165 Osbert de B. held part of a fee, Somerset, from William Malet, and Hugh de B. had lands in Normandy. Walter de B. (13th cent.) held lands of the Honour of Wallingford; and 1316 John de Bamfield was Lord of Weston, Somerset, and of Poltimore and other estates, Devon (Palgr. Parl. Writs). The Lords Poltimore are of this race.

Amongst the old Devonshire families now scantily represented are those of Bampfield or Bampfylde. Those at Poltimore and Hestercombe in Devon and Somerset were amongst the most distinguished, and the knightly family of Poltimore, Devon, in the 17th century, held that estate as far back as the reign of Edward I. (W.) (Collinson's "Somerset"). Richard Bamfield, a Devonshire gentleman, contributed £25 to the Armada fund in 1588 (Sp.). Thomas Bamfield was chamberlain of Exeter in 1654 (I.), and Bamfield was an Exmouth name in the time of Charles I. (Webb). Weston Bampfylde is a Somersetshire parish.
