Baneegee Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

The Bhangi (Sanskrit: भङ्गी,) or Valmiki (as they prefer to be known) caste are considered the lowest of the low in the Indian caste system. This status is also referred to as untouchable, as those of higher castes fear touching them, believing it will physically and spiritually pollute them. An individual's caste would typically dictate the profession they followed. In the case of the Bhangi, it appears their original occupation was breaking reeds to make baskets. However, for at least two-hundred years the Bhangis have been a sweeper caste. This caste is best known for cleaning toilets.

It has wrongly been reported that the caste has taken its name from the Sanskrit, bhang (भङ्ग,) a cannabis drink that the caste were said to be addicted to. Bhangis are predominately Hindu and are not vegetarian. They face socio-economic discrimination and are the subject of pejorative terms, such as 'son of a bhangi.'
