David Banks is recorded in Wester Baldryk, 1573 (Pitfirrane, 202), Jonet Banks in Linlithgow, 1684 RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 262), and in the Edinburgh Marriage Records of seventeenth century the name appears as Banks, Bankes, and Bankis. (2) John Bankis in Kirkwall retoured heir of Alexander Bankis his father, 1648 (Retours Orkney, 53) most probably derived his surname from Banks near Kirkwall. The Caithness surname of Banks is also of Orkney origin.
