There are several small places named Bankhead, but the surname is most probably from Bankhead on the mutual border of the parishes of Kilmarnock and Dreghorn, Ayrshire. Sir William Bankhede was curate to Dame Issabella Wallace, Lady Lowdoune, in 1527 (Trials, I, p. 136). The seal of John Bankhead or Bankheid, eldest son of Peter Bankhead in Bushe, Cunynghame, Ayr, is appended to a charter of 1559 (Macdonald, 99). Helen Bankheid is in record in Edinburgh in 1600 (Edinb. Marr.), Hugh Bankheid was retoured heir of James Bankheid in Eister Brigend of Kilwinning in 1630 (Retours, Ayr, 270), Hew Bankheid was taxed in 1634 for Lis lands in Perth (RPC. 2 ser. V. p. 588), and another Hugh Bankhead was surgeon in Portnessock, Wigtownshire, in 1764 (Wigtown). Peter Bankheid in Corshous, witness in 1609, and John Bankheid indweller at Annanhill in 1680 (Hunter, p. 44, 65).
