From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A corruption of Baddeby, from lands of that name which were probably in Berwickshire. Simon de Baddeby had a charter of lands in Lamberton, c. 1270, to which William de Baddeby, tunc constabularius de Berewic, was one of the witnesses (Home, 224; BNCH., XVI, p. 334). William de Baddeby who witnessed a charter by Patrick, earl of Dunbar, c. 1248—89 (Rame, 32) had a confirmation from King Alexander III of "totam terrain de Meners cum pertenentiis" (RMS., 1, App. I, 95). John de Baddeby and Nicol de Baddeby, both of the county of Berewyk, rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 203,212). Adam de Badby of Lambertone in the county of Berewyke also rendered homage in same year (ibid., p. 206), and in 1300 gave his brother Richard a charter of lands in Nort Lambirtoun (Home, 225). In 1315 an inquisition was made into the lands and fishings of Alexander de Badeby in Paxton and Tweed (Bain, 111,461), and in 1323 Sir Alexander de Baddeby claimed the whole land of Maner in Peeblesshire (APS., I, p. 482; RMS., I, App. I, 96). Nicholas de Badby and Ricardus de Badby appear as charter witnesses in 1325 and 1332 (BNCH., XVI, p. 330,332). John Badbee had a precept of remission in 1536 (RSS., II, 2033), John Badbe paid iiij lib. for his burgeschip in Haddington, 1539 (Mill, Plays, p. 251). Adam Badby was a witness in Fentounebarnis in 1583 (Laing, 1056), and Robert Baptie was constable of Elstanefurde in 1633 (RPC., 2. ser. V, p. 86). David Baptie apprentice in Edinburgh, 1672 (Edin. App.), John and Thomas Baptie were fined for attending conventicles in 1680 (RPC., 3. ser. VI p. 426), and Patrick Babtie, son of Patrick Baptie, is in record in 1738 (Fordell).
