BARCLET: Most probably an old spelling of Barclay which has become a fixed surname (compare the quotation from Dr. Hay Fleming under Barclay). John Barcleyth was retoured heir of Tames Barcleyth in Cowtray, his father, in the lands of Cowtray, 1600 (Retours, Fife, 87). Agnes Barclet was retoured heir of David Barclet, portioner of Luthrie, 1607, and Margaret Berclit was retoured heir of James Berclit in Boddumcraig, in lands in the barony of Balmerinoch, 1647 (ibid., 187,705). William Barclett is recorded in the Holmeheid of Pitcairlie, 1632 (Dunblane).
