This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the braeler,' a maker of cinctures or girdles, from the Old English brayle, from French braie or braye, i.e. breeches, whence braiel, a band to fasten breeches. Sailors still speak of 'brailing up sails.' Under date 1355 Mr. Riley, in his Memorials of London, gives the 'Articles and Ordinances of the Braelers.' He also has an account of the burning of some gloves and broth for being false in make and fashion (pp. 377 and 349).
