Barnet Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Bernard,' or 'Barnard.' The Cistercian monk gave a wonderful impetus in the 13th century to this name, already popular. A large number of Bernards sprang up in Furness after the Abbey came under the Bernardino rule; Bernard Gilpin's name is a case in point. The popular form was Barnet. There are more than a hundred Barnetts in the London Directory. Barnes and Barnet seem to suggest a nick. Barn and a diminutive Barnett. It is quite possible that such is the case, but in general Barnes must be looked on as local, and Barnett is simply a provincial pronunciation of Barnard. Barnet is turned into a title of high degree in the following entry:

'Of Barronet Coll, for his child's layreston.': Churchwardens' Accounts, Gateshead, 1643.

For instances v. Bernard.

Bardsley says that in England the Cistercian monk, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, gave a great impetus in the thirteenth century to this name, and that "a large number of Bernards sprang up in Furnmess after the Abbey came under the Bernardine rule." It may also possibly be from the town of Barnet in Hertfordshire. Both forms are current in Scotland, and are also found in the Edinburgh Marriage Records.
