Barnett Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Bernard,' or 'Barnard.' The Cistercian monk gave a wonderful impetus in the 13th century to this name, already popular. A large number of Bernards sprang up in Furness after the Abbey came under the Bernardino rule; Bernard Gilpin's name is a case in point. The popular form was Barnet. There are more than a hundred Barnetts in the London Directory. Barnes and Barnet seem to suggest a nick. Barn and a diminutive Barnett. It is quite possible that such is the case, but in general Barnes must be looked on as local, and Barnett is simply a provincial pronunciation of Barnard. Barnet is turned into a title of high degree in the following entry:
'Of Barronet Coll, for his child's layreston.': Churchwardens' Accounts, Gateshead, 1643.
For instances v. Bernard.
(Teutonic) 1 the Continental cognate of the Anglo-Saxon Beorn = Warrior, Nobleman + the French diminutive suff. -et.
2 the Old Norse Björn =Bear + the French diminutive suff. -et.
3 Poss. also occasionally a descendant of the common Anglo-Saxon Beornnoð-Warrior- Boldness. [Old English beorn, warrior + nóð, boldness] 4 confused with Barnard = Bernard, q.v.
(English) Descendant of little Bernard (bear, hard).
A town in Hertfordshire, and parishes in that co. and in Middlesex and Lincoln. In many instances the name Barnard is so corrupted. It is-why I know not-a common name among the Jews.
From Barnet; a location name in Hertfordshire; or from the Old Norse, Bjárni; from the German, Barnatt, Barnert; from the Flemish, Bernert; a personal name.
