From Barnes in the parish of Premnay, Aberdeenshire. Robert of Bernis was a goldsmith in 1465 (Laing, 154), John Barnis witnessed an instrument of sasine in 1496 (Bamff, p. 37), and Alexander Barnis was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1524 (NSCM., I, p. 48). Thomas Barnys was notary public in 1536 (Laing, 404), William Barnis granted the chaplainry of the Three Kings of Culane (Cologne) in Dundee, 1588 (REB., II, 362). Alexander Bairins was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1575 (RSCA., I, p. 220), Gilbert Bairnis was 'sacristar' there, 1595 (CRA., p. 117), and Mathew Bairnis was admitted burgess of the burgh, 1616 (NSCM., I, p. 117). Euphemia Barns is recorded in Dundee, 1621 (Brechin), and John Barns, skinner in Haddington, was charged with defying the town authorities in 1628 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 593). James Barnes was merchant burgess of Edinburgh, 1649 (Inquis., 3257), Jean Bams daughter of deceased William Bams of Belweddocke, 1656 (DPD., II, p. 208), Robert Barnes of Kirkhill, Ayrshire, in record, 1668 (Corsehill, p. 81), John Barns or Barnes was provost of Glasgow, 1687 (RPC., 3. ser.
