BARNIESON: This Caithness surname is merely a form of Barnetsoun, which again is "a Scotticised form of the Scandinavian name Bernsten" (Mill, Diary, p. LXXXVI). The f is not heard in the local pronunciation of the name. In 1576 Bernissoun (Oppressions, p. 33). Anna Barnatsone was charged in 1654 with superstitiously "goeing to St. John's Chappell" in Freswick, Caithness (Old Lore Misc., V, p. 61), and William Barnatson in Kirk, Caithness, appears in record in 1662 (Caithness, p. 1). William Barnesoun, bailie in Quendaill, 1624 (OSS., I, 84).
