This surname, of English origin, seems not to have flourished in Scotland. About 1165 Roger de Barneuile witnessed a grant by Serlo, clericus regis, to the Abbey of Kelso (Kelso, 216). Adam de Berneuile witnessed the resignation of Roger, rector of Ellesdene, in 1228 (ibid., 330). Christopher Barnwell appears in Edinburgh in 1665 (Edinb. Marr.). Bardsley says the name is from Barnwall in Northamptonshire.
