A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Barron. Baron usually meant one who held his lands from the king by military service, but there are many instances of persons being called barons who held of subject superiors, the "Bissets Barrones" of Lovat for example. In other instances "Barons" were just landowners who had a certain amount of jurisdiction over the populations on their lands. An old surname in Angus. Between 1400—1500 the name appears there as Baron, Baroun, Barrone, Barroun, and Berroun. The name here probably originated from the small baronies attached to the Abbey of Coupar-Angus. Thus the tenant of the barony of Glenisla became Robert Barrone, tenant of Glennylay, 1508 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 265), and so throughout all the baronies belonging to the abbey. The name was also common in Edinburgh in the fifteenth-sixteenth centuries. Patrick Baroun was juror on an inquest in Edinburgh, 1428 (RAA., II, 61). A later Patrick Barone, burgess of Edinburgh, who had a grant of the land of Spitalefeld beside Inverkeithing, Fife, from Henry, Abbot of Dunfermline, 1477 (RD., 479), may have been the provost who died c 1488. Another Patrick Barroun of Spitlefeild witnessed a deed in 1539 (SCM., IV, p. 32). Andrew Baron was present in parliament in 1534 as depute constable (APS., II p. 337), and James Barroun was dean of guild of Edinburgh, 1555 (Protocols, I) William Barrin in Eistoun, Cromar, 1647 (SCM., III, p. 197). The Frasers of Reelick were known as Mac Barrons = "sons of the baron.".

The Origin and Signification of Scottish Surnames (1862) by Clifford Stanley Sims (1839-1896)

The word Baron is of Celtic extraction, and originally synonymous with man in general. It has this meaning in the Salic law, and in. the laws of the Lombards; in the English law, the phrase baron and feme is equivalent to man and wife. It was afterward used to denote a man of respectability, a stout or valiant man; and Barone was also used by the Italians to signify a beggar.

From denoting a stout or valiant man, it was employed as a name for a distinguished military leader, who having fought and conquered under some great commander, was afterward rewarded by him with a part of the lands which he had acquired.

As a surname, it was originally Le Baron, The Baron. Gaelic, Baran, a baron.

An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

From Baron, near Caen. William de Baron, son of Aiulph de Foro, was an early benefactor to Ardennes Abbey, Normandy; and William de B., t. Rich. I., confirmed his ancestor’s gifts (Mémoires de la Society des Antiquaires de la Normandie). Richard le (de) Baron held one and a half fee in Devon, 1165. The Barons of Ireland claim descent from Fitzgerald.
