BARONDOUN: Barbour mentions a knight, Sir William de Barondoun, as one of those who fought on Bruce's side at the battle of Methven, 1306. Sir William de Burudun, miles, is witness to a charter by Petrus de Haga to the Abbey of Melrose Melros) along with Thomas Rimor of Ercildun and others. (Burudun is the spelling given in Russell's Haigs of Bemersyde, p. 463, and in the facsimile of the charter. In Scott's Sir Tristrem, p. XIV, the charter is also given and the name spelled Burndun), Lord Hailes says, who Barondoun was 'I know not' (Annals, II, p. 8). A Roger de Burndon witnessed a charter by Adam de Baddeby in 1300 (Home, 225). It is also possible that the name may be a metathesis of Broundoun. There was a barony of this name which in 1436 was the property of Robert of Haswel (OPS., I, p. 385).
